Focus & Methodology
Europe first, not Europe only
The focus is on systems, capabilities and units since 1990, with particular attention to Europe. “Europe first, not Europe only” covers European manufacturers and developments, non-European systems with documented European users, and European systems in service worldwide. Earlier systems are included where they remain relevant to this period or explain a line of development.
From requirement to system
The starting point is the requirement: what problem was the system intended to solve, under which conditions and for which users? Development, testing and documented service use follow.
Individual specifications are assessed in context. A capability attributed to the firearm does not automatically extend to the suppressor, aiming module or complete equipment package.
Describe service use precisely
Offered, tested, procured and fielded are distinct states. A photograph or individual account does not, by itself, establish that an entire unit was equipped with a system.
“Independently confirmed” is used only where independent corroboration exists. A plausible account or a well-known source is not sufficient.
Evidence before assertion

Assess the source and the claim separately
Manufacturer manuals and official records are important starting points, but they provide different perspectives. A manufacturer’s specification, a test report and a participant’s recollection each support different kinds of claim.
Significant claims are checked for provenance, date and scope. Manufacturer statements, first-hand accounts, independent corroboration and editorial assessment remain distinct. Source classes used in tables are explained before their first appearance; they are not blanket quality ratings.
Keep gaps and corrections visible
Contradictions are identified and missing information remains unresolved. Where dimensions conflict, the original values and references are retained; calculated conversions are explicitly labelled.
New evidence can change an assessment. Substantive changes after initial publication are documented through an updated date and a linked change log.
Use AI and imagery transparently
Artificial intelligence (AI) assists with research, organisation, transcription, translation and language editing. References, figures and quotations are checked against the original material. Editorial responsibility remains with the publisher.
Images carry source and rights information. Illustrative images and AI-generated visuals are labelled. They do not establish the identity, configuration or military use of a particular system.
