The scope covers systems introduced since 1990. This includes both non-European systems fielded by European special operations forces and European systems used by non-European operators. Specialised military forces and special-operations support forces are included where they have a direct bearing on the capabilities or systems under examination. Pre-1990 developments are considered where required for context.

The opening programme examines handguns developed or adapted for specific maritime and specialised operational requirements. Its focus is not the mythology surrounding a single product, but the interplay of requirement, systems engineering, accessories and user status.

Manufacturer documentation, original military records and official sources form the starting point. Specialist literature, interviews and contemporary media are assessed according to provenance, proximity to the subject matter and potential vested interests.
