CYBERSMART

CYBERSMART is a long-term specialist publication dedicated to the source-based assessment of modern military, law-enforcement and tactical systems. Its focus is not the fast news cycle, but an understanding of requirements, technology, use and effects within the wider system context.

The name CYBERSMART emerged at the intersection of cyber security and military systems—long before the Bundeswehr established the Cyber and Information Domain (CIR) as a distinct organisational area. The cybersmart.eu domain, registered at that time, now serves as the editorial home of the project.

CYBERSMART.TACTICAL deliberately extends that name beyond cyber security. Contemporary operations depend on the integration of tactics, training, sensors, communications, command and control, information collection, effects and cyber capabilities. The publication examines those relationships through traceable sources and expressly does not operate as a news portal.

Emblem and compass instrument

Operational dimensions. Technological integration.

The upright sword represents the land domain and the capacity for decisive action. Its upward-pointing blade signifies initiative, readiness and—where the mission requires it—the capacity to deliver precise offensive effects. The wings represent the air domain, while the trident represents the maritime domain. The surrounding ring denotes specialisation and precision—in a tactical context, including precision marksmanship and the sniper discipline.

The compass instrument adds the technological and situational layer. Its active contacts and bearing markers abstractly represent information collection, technical reconnaissance, detection and geolocation, communications and networked situational awareness—from higher-level ISR assets to tactical unmanned aircraft at individual operator level. The resulting information advantage supports rapid decision-making, precision and effective action.

The instrument therefore visualises what CYBERSMART.TACTICAL brings together: people, technology, information and effects as parts of a single operational system.

The emblem and instrument are editorial identifiers. They are not official national emblems, agency or unit insignia, or qualification badges.

Why CYBERSMART

Beyond the data sheet: placing systems in verifiable context.

Information on military and law-enforcement systems is often fragmented. Each source reveals only part of the picture; no single source explains the system in its entirety.

CYBERSMART brings together manufacturer documentation, military documentation, official government and agency sources, and specialist media. The analysis examines operational requirements, development, trials, procurement, entry into service, system context and documented user status.

The purpose is not to produce rankings of supposedly “best” products, but to build a durable knowledge base that clearly distinguishes established facts, indications and open questions.

Author & Publisher

Professional perspective. Transparent standards.

The founder and publisher is responsible for topic selection, research, assessment and publication. His perspective combines military practice, technical systems experience and cyber security.

He joined the Bundeswehr immediately after German reunification and served for more than twelve years as a commissioned officer in command and leadership appointments. Many systems and concepts developed from the early 1990s onwards therefore continue to shape the project’s specialist focus.

The foundations were laid during officer training and subsequent degree studies in communications and information engineering at a Bundeswehr university. This combined a sound understanding of infantry tactics, command procedures and the employment of small arms with technical work on sensors, communications, information processing and IT security.

During military service, the principal technical fields were air situational awareness, radar systems engineering and communications engineering. This was followed by work in the defence industry on naval communications systems and solutions for SIGINT and COMINT.

As military capabilities became increasingly digital, the focus shifted progressively towards cyber security. For many years, this included responsibilities across the defence industry and critical infrastructure, including service as a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

This experience informs the questions; it does not replace evidence. Claims remain bound to the sources disclosed for them.

A relevant military or law-enforcement system falls within scope if it meets at least one of the following three criteria.

Manufacturer

The company or manufacturer is European.

Development

The principal technical development took place in Europe.

User

The system is operated by European military special operations forces or law-enforcement special operations units.

The scope therefore includes non-European systems operated by European users as well as European systems operated by non-European users.

The principal focus is on systems introduced since 1990. Earlier developments are included where they are necessary to understand the subject.

Editorial policy and working method

Evidence before assertion.

Perspective shapes the questions. Evidence determines what can be stated.

Sources are assessed in context; source provenance, evidential strength and the limits of verification are made explicit.
